Courts that oversee bankruptcy filings are part of the federal court system, and are generally referred to as U.S. Bankruptcy Courts.
In Washington state, as in all other states, bankruptcy filings are handled by the U.S. Bankruptcy Courts, which are specialized courts within the federal judiciary system. These courts are exclusively responsible for handling bankruptcy cases under the federal Bankruptcy Code. Washington is divided into two bankruptcy districts, the Western District of Washington and the Eastern District of Washington, each with its own bankruptcy court. Individuals and businesses seeking bankruptcy protection must file their cases in the appropriate district based on their location. The U.S. Bankruptcy Courts in Washington operate under the oversight of the U.S. District Courts and ultimately the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
