§ 30-24-9. Property of deceased residents. All goods, chattels, property, money, and effects of a deceased resident of the Rhode Island veterans' home that have not been disposed of by him or her by a completed inter vivos conveyance or gift, or by a valid will, after payment therefrom of the funeral expenses, which shall not exceed ten thousand dollars ($10,000), and after payment therefrom of the reasonable debts and expenses of the deceased resident to be determined by rules and regulations as shall be adopted by the director, shall upon his or her decease become the property of the state, and shall be applied by the director of human services, or his or her designee, to the uses and purposes of the veterans' restricted account; provided, however, that the director may, in his or her discretion, deliver to any surviving relative of the deceased resident any of the property or effects as may serve as a memento of the deceased resident. For purposes of this section, the provisions of chapter 24 of title 33 shall be applicable.
